Windows Media Center has become an add-on, but is still available for Windows 8.

Unfortunately, the current vmcMote server, version 1.2.8.2, does not work properly with Windows 8. It is not correctly handling the new .NET framework 4.5 in Windows 8.

I finally fixed those issues and created a new server, version 1.2.8.3, that works with Windows 8.
You can download it here: Download vmcMoteServer 1.2.8.3 BETA
It's still labeled as BETA, as I did not found the time so far to test the new server intensively. Any feedback is appreciated.

Best regards,
vmcMote HD is a special iPad version of vmcMote.

The orginal idea: Vista Media Center (vmc) + reMote = vmcMote!
Well, windows vista is not up to date any more, but the name stays ;-)

vmcMote is a native iOS application that allows you wireless access to the music library of your Windows Vista and Windows 7 Media Center.

As opposed to your normal infrared-remote and the most remotes you can find in the Apple AppStore, vmcMote is a two-way remote: It not only sents commands, but also gets information back from your media center about the its current state!

It enables you to browse the music library, search for music, play/enqueue tracks, view the currently played music track, the current playlist (and on Windows 7 also the currently played video), navigate inside the current track, create and manage playlists (on device only). And you can do all of this with your Tv switched off! Furthermore, a simple remote functionality is included for cases when the Tv is on and you need some basic remote functionality.

vmcMote and vmcMote HD are avaiable on the App Store. The price for each version is 5,99€.

There is also a free Lite versions for both Apps available (Links: vmcMote Lite and vmcMote HD Lite). The free versions are limited to 100 tracks in the local database. Nevertheless, the sync is performed completely to let you judge the time needed. Furthermore, the set of remote buttons is limited. I encourage you to test the free Lite versions before you buy!

Functionality Overview

Here is a short overview of functionality provided by vmcMote:

- Now Playing View

List the currently played track (on Windows 7 also the currently played video!)

Lists all tracks in the current playlist

Play/pause, next track, previous track, direct play track

Jump to a position inside a track via a slider

Playtime of track

Cover view

- Library View

Albums

Artists

Genre

Radio Stations (Streams are configurable via xml-file on server)

Cover Wall Mode if you turn to landscape (since 1.2.0)!

Search

Cover Support

Play/Enqueue/AddToPlaylist complete albums or single tracks

- Playlist View

Edit mode (Reorder tracks | Delete single track | Play/enqueue playlist | Import "Now Playing")

Browse mode (Quick view | Add, delete, rename playlists | Select the edit list)

"Now Playing" list is autosaved in case of an accidental deletion (for example by executing an unwanted play-track command).

- Remote View

A 5 x 5 Matrix of the most often used remote buttons.

Virtual Keyboard.

This is for convenience.

- Settings

Change between available servers.

Connect to server (from offline mode).

Change offline server (when in offline mode).

Get database information (Complete Sync).

Change the color theme of vmcMote.

Delete used servers.

"Auto connect" setting (auto connect to last connected server immediately).

"In-compilation-only-artists" setting (when disabled, these artists are not shown in artists list to reduce the list length. I initially had a little bit too much time after finishing my Master's Degree and personally wanted such an application. This was the reason to start the development.

I brought vmcMote to the appstore because I assumed other Media Center enthusiasts would like it. I selected a price of 5.99€. The money will serve the purpose to cover the expenses of the annual App Store fee, business application and so forth. Furthermore, I would also be glad to get a small return as I invested a lot of spare time into this project (more than 800 hours).

Because this is a private project, vmcMote is provided as it is. Usage is at your own risk. I will do my very best that it works as perfectly as possible and to support it as good as possible. Nevertheless, I am doing my Ph.D. at a big german car manufacturer now, and there will be times when I will not have the spare time to work on this project or be able to give instant support.thm82http://www.blogger.com/profile/17133869441010631777noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5623005100546040796.post-7108808332070669012010-06-08T21:50:00.010+02:002012-02-24T23:32:33.702+01:00New Version 1.2.0 in the App Store
Hey,

version 1.2.0 of vmcMote and vmcMote Lite is now available in the App Store.

There are the following new features:

- "Cover Wall" mode. The solution is pretty simple and I have to apologize that I have not found it before. Even if it was hard to find it. Anyway, a fix is included in the installer. It also works under vista and requires no reboot.

Second, the server is now installed by a full-fledged installer. Installation should therefore be much easier than before.

The server functionality itself was only very slightly modified. Most important, the phase 1 of the synchronization process should be much more robust now. Especially in case of currupt audio files.

A client update is not required as long as you are already running client version 1.1.2!

Greetings, Thomasthm82http://www.blogger.com/profile/17133869441010631777noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5623005100546040796.post-31282243902366373082010-03-21T13:57:00.003+01:002011-05-16T23:11:55.381+02:00vmcMote 1.1.2 in the AppStoreSince about a week, version 1.1.2 of vmcMote and vmcMote Lite is available in the AppStore.

The 1.1.2 update brings a new caching method, that will increase the caching of the Library View after a server connect especially in case of big libraries. The speed increase should be of a factor of 4 to 6.

Version 1.1.1 (released before 1.1.2) brought support for Windows 7 64 Bit on the server side and contained a quite a few server bug fixes.

For the full list of new features and fixes see the version history in the AppStore and the server history here on the server download page.

Greetings, Thomasthm82http://www.blogger.com/profile/17133869441010631777noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5623005100546040796.post-22642583234123597212010-01-04T15:43:00.006+01:002011-05-16T23:12:33.155+02:00vmcMote 1.1.0 in the AppStoreAs of today, version 1.1.0 of vmcMote and vmcMote Lite is available in the AppStore. The update contains several bug-fixes and also a few new features. A major focus was the Windows 7 compatibility:

New Features:

- Basic radio stream support. Radio streams can be configured by a Config-File on the server. A radio station config includes the name, stream address and a cover file. The infos are synced to vmcMote on the phone and radio streams can be enqueued from there.

- Adaptive slider control to allow fine grained in track jumping. The slider has three different speeds now. Just like in the iPhone OS 3.0 iPod app.

- Under Windows 7 and Vista without TvPack, the information of a just playing video is sent to vmcMote. Jumping in the video via slider works. The functionality is not available for LiveTV due to missing support by the Media Center SDK. TvPack is not supported due to missing information from Media Center SDK.

- Volume control via slider. The view becomes visible by tab into Cover View.

Bug Fixes:

- No more annoying popup when remoting of the WMP via wmpuice.dll should stop working. Instead the app switches to a "One-Title" mode seamlessly. In this mode, the limited information that are available from the Media Center SDK are used to show the now playing track inclusive runtime and current in-track position. Jumping in the track still works. Due to a bug in the SDK, this fallback mode does not work on Vista with TvPack however.

- The above-described mode ensures almost perfect compatibility with Windows 7. Repairing a broken wmpuice.dll is still not possible however as this is a bug on Microsoft's side (the WMP looses its COM+ remote interface). Therefore, if the remoting brakes, the whole now playing queue is not available any more but the now playing track is still shown.

- Fixed the bug that the Cancel-Button in Library View was not well clickable.

- Fixed the messed up buttons in Settings View.

- Several minor bug fixes and improvements.thm82http://www.blogger.com/profile/17133869441010631777noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5623005100546040796.post-16345900465003530172009-05-25T19:26:00.005+02:002011-05-16T23:13:07.861+02:00vmcMote available on the App StorevmcMote Lite and vmcMote are now available on the App Store.
Therefore, feel free to test the Lite version before you buy vmcMote.

The direct links to the Apps in the App Store are:

App Store link: vmcMote Lite

App Store link: vmcMote

Greetings, Thomasthm82http://www.blogger.com/profile/17133869441010631777noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5623005100546040796.post-12363548126115282942009-05-06T22:27:00.003+02:002009-05-06T23:40:23.425+02:00vmcMote submitted to AppleA few minutes ago, I submitted vmcMote to Apple.
Previous Server Versions
IMPORTANT:
- You need .NET Framework 3.5 to run vmcMote Server.
- Windows Vista 32 Bit with Media Center or Windows 7 - 32 or 64 Bit (all versions contain Media Center).

Install Instructions:
The new installer based server installation is pretty self explaining. However, you can also get the basic install instructions in the
Server Installation Help Section.

Server Settings:
The server can be configured. For example it's name. Please see the corresponding
Server Settings Help Section for more information.
What happened?

A: "One Title Mode" is a fallback mode that is used if the vmcMote server is not able to get the now playing queue any more. The reason for this is a problem with remoting the Windows Media Player (remoting the WMP is needed to get hold of the current playlist). Most likely this is due to race conditions between the Media Center and the required remoting plugin due to both remoting the same WMP instance.
As of server version 1.1.2, there is a fix included in the installation. You can find it in the base installation directory. Simply execute it. It does re-enable the remoting. Afterwards, you should be able to see the now palying list again.
A: If you run Win7 64Bit, make sure that the default WMP is the 32Bit version. A user reported that there are two versions. The 32Bit version is default. If you somehow changed that to the 64Bit version, the WMP will not be able to run the required plugin to enable vmcMote to retrieve the now playing list!

Q: The installation does not work. I am getting an error message that vmcMoteServer.exe was closed due to an error if I start Media Center.

A: This is very likely a problem of a not meet requirement. Make sure that you have Vista 32 Bit and .NET Framework 3.5 or Win 7 32/64 Bit.
A second reason could be missing access rights on the installation directory. The windows user account that is executing Media Center has to have read/write access to the vmcMote server directory. If it does not has proper access rights, there comes up a warning popup in Media Center during a Library Sync as of server version 1.1.0.0.

Q: The client is telling me that there is a problem with the installation after I connected to a server. Why?

A: It can happen that wmpuice.dll is not registered properly. Follow the instructions in the popup notice to solve the problem.

Q: I installed the server successfully, but vmcMote does not find the server. What's wrong?

A: This can have different reasons:
1. Make sure that your firewall allows incoming connections for vmcMoteServer.exe. Server discovery works by discovery broadcast packets. The listen port (UDP) on the server side is 12324. The TCP port for communication can be found in settings.xml. Make sure these two ports are open.
2. Your router may block the port due to a build in firewall between wireless and wired network. This is strange behavior, as the router should normally only switch between wired and wireless, but I had a user report about such an internal firewall. Try to open the discovery port in the router if configuring your windows firewall properly did not resolve the issue.
3. Because of the broadcast nature, client and server have to be in the same sub-network (same first 3 number of IP address)!
4. I might happen that the Addin, running inside Media Center, is not able to start vmcMoteServer.exe, the "real" server. The Addin gets the installation path via the registry. It might fail get the path from the registry or to access the installation directory (an access rights problem).
First, make sure you run the Installer from the same user account as you run MediaCenter for installation to work properly (The installer informs about this). If you install from another account, you need to set the access rights yourself. If this does not fix the problem, you might try to install the server to "c:\vmcMoteServer". This is a path were the Addin will search as a backup if it fails to locate the install directory via the registry.
5. I had a problem with a virtual network card of a virtual machine. Disable other network adapters (the ones that are not responsible for the connection to the client device) for testing purposes.
6. There has been a user report that a tethering app on the client device prevented the discovery. Try vmcMote (Lite) in iPhone Safe Mode to verify that no other app is disturbing the discovery.
7. Your network may be unstable. Broadcasts, as used in the discovery process, are not acknowledged and can get lost. Have a look at the last answer to the question "I have problems syncing my library" below to get more information about wireless network instability problems.

Q: I have problems syncing my library. The sync aborts at position xy.

A: Make sure that the Media Center process has write access in the vmcMoteServer installation directory. The new installer will try to set the rights properly. As of server version 1.1.0.0. , there comes up a warning popup in Media Center during a Library Sync if MediaCenter has improper access rights on the server directory.
A: If you have "always stay connected" (in vmcMote) diabled, try to enable it.
A: There was a user reporting that a rebuild of the WMP/MediaCenter Library did the trick.
A: If the problem persists: Close Media Center. Enable debug logging in settings.xml (see readme.txt) and restart Media Center. Afterwards, issue a few new sync's. Now, there should be a debug log file in the logs subdirectory (in the server directory). If you are a bit familiar with debug logs, you can probably pinpoint the problem yourself. I tried to explain some common problems in the log output. If the log file does not help you, feel free to sent me an email with your log.
A: This is an issue that should be solved since version 1.2.5: Your network might be unstable. In pre 1.2.5 versions, vmcMote was not very tolerant to longer (1 to 10 second) network outages. Be aware: you will not recognize such outages when you browse the web! You can verify your network is running properly by issuing a ping command to your Media Center PC from another machine. On windows, run "ping -n 10000 IP-Address" to get a long row of pings and have a look at the output. If there are errors or ping times about 1000ms, there is something wrong. Fixing such network problems (e.g. better antenna position, better antennas, other wirelss channel, different router ...) should get rid of a lot of vmcMote related problems.
A: There has a been a user report about a PRE-N router causing trouble. He resolved his connection related problems by disabling the PRE-N mode of his router (limiting it to 802.11g).

Q: I have several music tracks that show no correct runtime in vmcMote. What's the problem?

A: Please read the next question, this has something to do with the WMP database, not with vmcMote itself.

Q: I enabled debug logging, and there are several lines in my log after a library sync stating that the track length for a file was zero in the WMP library or something similar. What's the matter with this?

A: Well, there are some file types that are not fully supported by Windows Media Player (WMP). The WMP has incorrect track length information (being zero) in its database for such file types. Because of this, vmcMote has also no correct length information. Therefore, this is not a problem of vmcMote, but of the WMP in general. However, you will still be able to play/enqueue those files.

Q: There are none or wrong covers for some albums. Whats wrong with vmcMote?
A: vmcMote does only sync a cover if the album is longer than 10 minutes or has more than three tracks to reduce the amount of transfered data.
A: If there are wrong covers: vmcMote fetches covers from the "folder.jpg" that the WMP creates in every music folder (the file is hidden by default). If you have multiple albums in one folder, the vmcMote server will only be able to fetch one cover for all of them, resulting in wrong covers. Note: Since version 1.2.5, vmcMote uses embedded covers if available. folder.jpg is only backup.

Q: I have a problem that is not listed here, what shall I do?

A: Feel free to post your problem in one of the forum threads listed below. Or just write me an email (thmang82@gmail.com) with a detailed problem description, facts about your system environment and/or a debug log.

Feedback and Discussions:

I encourage discussing vmcMote in one of the following forum threads:

In English : vmcMote on Windows Experts Community (formerly TheGreenButton).

Note that the old, long thread on the TheGreenButtton unfortunately got lost in the transition to Windows Experts community. You can change
it without loosing playlists of sync state.

- <CoverResolution>
The pixel resolution of the covers that are transmitted to the
client. Default is 160. You can reduce this if you want a faster
cover transfer to the client.
Values between 100 and 320 are supported.

- <StabilizeNetworkByPing>
I had problems that Windows or my Wireless Router delayed packets
up to a few seconds. I was able to resolve this by sending a
ping to the router once a second. This stabilized the connection.
If you do not like vmcMote Server to ping your router, feel free
to disable this option.
Supported Values: TRUE / FALSE. Default is TRUE. I recommend to
leave this option enabled.

- <ForcePlayingMediaAwareness>
Media Center is sometimes not aware of playing media when tracks
are enqueued by the SDK functions. Therefore, also when enqueued
by vmcMote. As a result, the playing music shows not up in the
"Now Playing" pane in Media Center.
This is no problem itself, but: Auto sleeping is not prevented in
this case.
When enabled, vmcMote Server will issue Media Center to navigate
to the music library before tracks are enqueued, and return
afterwards. This forces Media Center to recognize the enqueue
event.
Supported values: TRUE / FALSE. Default is FALSE.

- <DebugLogLevel>
Available as of version 1.0.1.

If you experience problems, you can enable debug logging by
changing the default value 0 (diabled) to 1 or 2 or 3.
Logging is momentarily focussed on the sync behaviour.

Log Levels:
- 1 Only very important information are logged.
- 2 Additionally behaviour summaries are provided.
- 3 Detailed sync behaviour is logged. This mode is helpful, to
pinpoint errors that are related to individual files in
the database. Also, catched exceptions are logged. Be aware
that they do not necessarily indicate problems, they can
also be intended (try/catch).

A log file is only created if log events emerge. Each logline
starts with the time, followed by the log level number, followed
by the log message.

Supported values: 0 (disabled, default), 1, 2, 3

- <AlbumLengthMinimumMinutes>

This is used for the album detection. If the length of all tracks
with a certain Album/AlbumArtist combination is shorter than this,
it is not classified as album and will not be shown in the album
view. Also, no cover will be synced.
Note that too small values will lead to single tracks being
classified as "album", polluting the album list.

Default is 9 (minutes)thm82http://www.blogger.com/profile/17133869441010631777noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5623005100546040796.post-353721419761364822008-03-05T20:21:00.000+01:002010-12-29T22:51:08.810+01:00
TROUBLESHOOTING --- INSTALL --- SETTINGS
RADIO --- KNOWN_ISSUES --- PLANNED_FEATURES

Server Install and Update Instructions

Server Install Instructions:

- Before you install, check the requirements!
However, the installer will also test on the correct .NET Framework version.

1. Close Windows Media Center

3. Run the Installer and follow the instructions.
- Make sure that you run the installer as the windows user that
normally runs Media Center.

3.1 This applies ONLY if you have another firewall than the
Windows Firewall running:
- Ensure that vmcMoteServer.exe is allowed to communicate
in the local network.

4. Restart Windows Media Center.
- The addin will now be loaded automatically in the background.
(Be patient, addins are loaded only 2 to 5 seconds after
Media Center startup)
- vmcMote running on your IPhone/IPodTouch will now find the
server automatically.

5. Open the base folder of your vmcMote server installation. There is a subfolder called “radio”. Inside, you will find an xml file called “radio_stations_demo.xml”, two applications and a subfolder "stations". First, remove the _demo part of the xml file. “radio_stations.xml” is the file that vmcMoteServer uses to read your configured radio stations. The xml is called _demo.xml in the download package to prevent overwriting your self created radio_station.xml on server updates.

The stations folder contains the station information. You will find a demo configuration in there. To add a new station, just copy this folder, and rename it, as you like. Inside the newly created station folder, you find a file named “station_info.xml” and a demo image. Delete the image, and copy a cover file of the station you want to add into the folder. Then, have a look into “station_info.xml”. Change the name as you want and enter the correct filename of your cover file. Replace the URL by the URL of your radio station. This needs to be the pure URL of the stream, not a stream playlist (like .m3u)! Now, the new station has to be added to the “radio_stations.xml” in the radio folder. There are two ways to do so: Either, you modify it by hand: add a new station tag and set the name to the name of the subfolder of the new station inside the stations directory. Or, you can just execute the “RadioStationsXmlGenerator.exe”. It will scan your stations folder for subfolders and automatically generate a new “radio_stations.xml”.

The order of stations can be modified by rearranging the <station> tags in the “radio_stations.xml”.

You can always check your configuration by executing “RadioStationChecker.exe”. It will verify that “radio_stations.xml” is a proper xml file, the stations defined in it exist (their subfolders), and it will also check the consistency of each “station_info.xml” of a specified station (correctness of the xml code and also the existence of the cover image file). Please note that the stream addresses are not verified.

Q: And how do I get pure radio stream addresses from a stream specified as m3u?

A: The way I use to locate pure radio stream addresses is to open a stream URL from a website with Windows Media Player. Then, right click on the field on the bottom showing the info about the playing media, select “File” and then “Properties”. In the popup, you will find a “Location” field at the bottom that contains the pure URL of the just playing stream.
However, this does not work for some redirected Stream-URLs. The WMC is showing another URL as it is using internally (and that is what vmcMoteServer sees). In this case, vmcMote is not able to identify the track info and show the cover in the now playing view. The VLC Media Player seems to be able to get the address behind the redirect. Just open the stream with it, drop down the arrow in front of the stream in the playlist and right click on the now visible stream itself. Select media information. The URL is shown at the bottom of the popup.

Q: Where do I find radio streams?

A: There are several ways:
- You can go the website of a terrestrial radio station and look if they offer a stream.
- You could just search the web for stream addresses. They are often posted in forums.
- It’s a long time that I used MoreRadio. But, back then; it just opened stream addresses via the Media Player process used by Media Center (just as I do too). You can minimize Media Center, open Media Player and read out the properties of the playing stream as described before.

Q: Why don’t you offer a way to import my streams from the MoreRadio or McShoutCast radio plugin?

A: There could probably be ways to access the databases or config-files or whatever these plugins use to store their data, and get hold of the station information. However, I would be dependent of yet another third party. So if something changes in their data format, I would have to support multiple versions and so on. I do not have the time (due to my work) to implement it and also not to support this in a proper way. But feel free to write a converter ;-)</station>thm82http://www.blogger.com/profile/17133869441010631777noreply@blogger.com
